Characters:

  • Host (Alex): Energetic, enthusiastic, a bit over-the-top.
  • Contestant 1 (Brenda): Impulsive shopper, easily swayed by deals.
  • Contestant 2 (Carlos): Smart, budget-conscious shopper.
  • Announcer (Voiceover): Dramatic, booming voice.
  • Off-Screen Shoppers: (Optional, can be played by members of the audience)

Setting:

A makeshift grocery store set. Shelves with various items, some marked with misleading sale signs.

Scene 1: Introduction

(Lights up on Alex, standing center stage with a microphone.)

Alex: Welcome, welcome, welcome to "The Great Grocery Games," the only show where your shopping skills are put to the ultimate test! I’m your host, Alex, and tonight we’re going to see who has the savviest shopping sense in town!

(Audience applause)

Alex: We have two amazing contestants ready to battle it out in the aisles of savings…or maybe spending! Let’s meet them!

(Lights up on Brenda and Carlos, standing on either side of Alex.)

Alex: First up, we have Brenda, a self-proclaimed "deal hunter" who never met a sale she didn’t like! Brenda, tell us, what’s your shopping motto?

Brenda: (Enthusiastically) If it’s on sale, I buy it! You never know when you might need 12 jars of pickled onions!

(Audience laughter)

Alex: (Chuckles) Alright then! And next, we have Carlos, a meticulous planner and budget extraordinaire. Carlos, what’s your secret to smart shopping?

Carlos: (Calmly) Preparation and a little bit of self-control. I make a list, stick to it, and resist the urge to impulse buy.

Alex: (Smiling) Well, we’ll see if that self-control holds up under the pressure!

(Lights dim slightly.)

Announcer (Voiceover): Tonight, our contestants will face three grueling rounds of shopping challenges! First, "The Temptation Aisle!" Then, "Coupon Chaos!" And finally, the ultimate test, "The Budget Breakdown!"

(Lights up again on Alex.)

Alex: Are you ready to play "The Great Grocery Games?"

Brenda and Carlos: (Together) Ready!

Scene 2: The Temptation Aisle

(Alex gestures to a section of the set filled with brightly colored, attractively displayed items, many with sale signs that are somewhat misleading.)

Alex: Welcome to "The Temptation Aisle!" In this round, our contestants have five minutes to grab as many items as they can that appear to be great deals. But beware! Some of these "deals" are traps!

(Alex hands Brenda and Carlos shopping baskets.)

Alex: On your mark, get set, SHOP!

(Upbeat, frantic music plays. Brenda immediately grabs items, throwing them into her basket without much thought. Carlos carefully examines each item, reading labels and comparing prices.)

(Brenda grabs a giant bag of chips labeled "Family Size – 25% More!")

Brenda: (To herself) Ooh, more chips for less! Gotta grab this!

(Carlos picks up a similar bag, looks at the price per ounce, and puts it back.)

Carlos: (To himself) Actually, the smaller bag is cheaper per ounce. Tricky!

(Brenda sees a display of cookies with a sign that says "Buy One Get One 50% Off!")

Brenda: (Excitedly) Cookies! And they’re practically free!

(She grabs two boxes. Carlos looks at the regular price of the cookies before the discount.)

Carlos: (To himself) Even with the discount, they’re still overpriced. Not worth it.

(Brenda spots a display of novelty items near the checkout lane.)

Brenda: (Gasps) A singing toothbrush! I need this!

(She throws it in her basket. Carlos is focused on comparing different brands of cereal, looking at the ingredients and sugar content.)

(Time is called.)

Alex: Time’s up! Let’s see what our contestants have in their baskets! Brenda, let’s start with you.

(Brenda proudly shows off her overflowing basket.)

Brenda: I got the family-size chips, the discounted cookies, the singing toothbrush…I think I did pretty well!

Alex: (Raises an eyebrow) Let’s see. Announcer, the verdict!

Announcer (Voiceover): Brenda, you fell for the "Family Size" trick! The smaller bag was actually a better value. The cookies, while discounted, are still more expensive than other brands. And the singing toothbrush? Pure impulse buy! Total savings: Negative $5!

(Brenda looks deflated.)

Alex: Ouch! Carlos, let’s see your basket.

(Carlos shows his basket, which has fewer items but seems more thoughtfully selected.)

Carlos: I focused on comparing prices per unit, checking ingredients, and only buying what I actually need.

Announcer (Voiceover): Carlos, excellent work! You identified the hidden costs and avoided the impulse buys. Total savings: $7!

(Audience cheers for Carlos.)

Alex: Carlos takes the lead!

Scene 3: Coupon Chaos

(Alex gestures to a table covered in coupons.)

Alex: Welcome to "Coupon Chaos!" In this round, our contestants have three minutes to find coupons for the items they have in their baskets. But beware! Some coupons are expired, some are for items they don’t have, and some have hidden restrictions!

(Alex hands Brenda and Carlos their baskets again.)

Alex: On your mark, get set, COUPON HUNT!

(Fast-paced, chaotic music plays. Brenda frantically grabs coupons without reading them carefully. Carlos systematically searches for relevant coupons, reading the fine print.)

(Brenda finds a coupon for $1 off any brand of yogurt.)

Brenda: (Triumphantly) Yogurt! I love yogurt!

(She throws it in her pile, even though she doesn’t have yogurt in her basket.)

(Carlos finds a coupon for 50 cents off the brand of cereal he selected.)

Carlos: (To himself) Perfect!

(Brenda finds a coupon for $2 off a specific brand of organic kale chips.)

Brenda: (Confused) Kale chips? What are those?

(She throws it away in frustration. Carlos finds a coupon that requires him to buy three of the same item to get the discount.)

Carlos: (To himself) Hmm, I only need one. Not worth it.

(Time is called.)

Alex: Time’s up! Let’s see how our contestants did in the coupon frenzy! Brenda, what did you find?

(Brenda proudly presents a stack of coupons.)

Brenda: I got a ton of coupons! I’m going to save so much money!

Alex: Let’s see if they’re actually valid. Announcer?

Announcer (Voiceover): Brenda, you have several expired coupons, a coupon for an item you don’t have, and a coupon with restrictions you didn’t meet. Total savings: $0!

(Brenda groans.)

Alex: Carlos, what about you?

(Carlos shows a few carefully selected coupons.)

Carlos: I focused on finding coupons that were relevant to the items in my basket and that I could actually use.

Announcer (Voiceover): Carlos, excellent couponing! All your coupons are valid and applicable. Total savings: $1.50!

(Audience applauds for Carlos.)

Alex: Carlos extends his lead!

Scene 4: The Budget Breakdown

(Alex gestures to a calculator and a whiteboard with a budget written on it.)

Alex: Welcome to "The Budget Breakdown!" In this final round, our contestants have to calculate the total cost of their items, factoring in any savings from the previous rounds, and see if they can stay within their budget of $25!

(Alex hands Brenda and Carlos calculators.)

Alex: On your mark, get set, CALCULATE!

(Brenda haphazardly punches numbers into the calculator, often making mistakes. Carlos methodically adds up the prices, double-checking his work.)

(Brenda realizes she’s way over budget.)

Brenda: (Panicked) Oh no! I’m at $40!

(She starts frantically removing items from her basket, but she’s not sure which ones to take out.)

(Carlos calmly calculates his total.)

Carlos: (To himself) $23.50. I’m within budget!

(Time is called.)

Alex: Time’s up! Let’s see who can stay within budget! Brenda, what’s your total?

Brenda: (Defeated) $32…after removing half my items.

(Alex shakes his head.)

Alex: Too high! Carlos, what’s your total?

Carlos: $23.50.

Announcer (Voiceover): Carlos stays within budget!

(Audience cheers loudly for Carlos.)

Alex: And the winner of "The Great Grocery Games" is…Carlos! Congratulations, Carlos, you’ve proven that smart shopping is all about planning, patience, and resisting the urge to buy a singing toothbrush!

(Alex presents Carlos with a "Smart Shopper" trophy.)

Alex: Brenda, you may not have won, but you’ve learned a valuable lesson about the importance of smart shopping habits.

Brenda: (Smiling sheepishly) I guess I need to start making a list!

(Alex turns to the audience.)

Alex: And that’s all the time we have for "The Great Grocery Games!" Remember, folks, shop smart, save money, and avoid those tempting but ultimately wasteful impulse buys! Goodnight!

(Lights fade.)

Possible additions:

  • Audience participation: Have audience members shout out advice or challenges to the contestants.
  • Commercial breaks: Insert short, funny commercials for fictional products that highlight bad shopping habits.
  • Running gags: Have Brenda keep trying to buy the singing toothbrush throughout the skit.

I hope this skit brings some laughter and valuable insights to your audience!
